Packaging and Crating Technologies to Present Newest Safety Solutions for Lithium Battery Fires during October National Manufacturing Month

WATERTOWN, Conn., Sept. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Every October, the International Trade Administration, the U.S. government, and manufacturing industry leaders join forces to celebrate National Manufacturing Month and the importance of American manufacturing innovation to our fast-paced society. One Connecticut manufacturer of a patented fire-suppressant product line designed to extinguish lethal battery fires will illuminate the largest industry event in North America. Specifically, Packaging and Crating Technologies (PACT®) in Watertown, Conn. will present its newest solutions against lithium-ion battery fires – TR Envelope and PACT Lion-X– at The Battery Show in Detroit, Michigan from October 12-15, 2026. The annual convention is the only gathering geared to both battery and EV tech companies.

Connecticut manufacturer Packaging And Crating Technologies (PACT®) will be introducing its new solution to lithium-ion battery fires – TR SleeveTM, a patented, specially coated paper that automatically cools a battery cell’s internal environment during thermal runaway, limits the transfer of heat between cells, and prevents a catastrophic event that can cause severe damage and cost human lives, at the National Battery Show in Detroit, Michigan from October 12-15, 2026.

“As of early 2026, lithium-ion battery fires are on the rise among E-mobility, micromobility and handheld electronics, causing frequent incidents on land, sea and in the air,” said Rodger Mort, chief operating officer at Packaging And Crating Technologies. “These fires are nearly impossible to extinguish and must smolder out on their own after burning for many hours and days, all while emitting lethal fumes and gases. Our proven innovations are critical safety solutions for first responders and the general public from a major catastrophic event.”

Mort notes that what makes these volatile batteries so dangerous is a process called thermal runaway in which the lithium-ion battery cell enters an uncontrollable, self-heating state caused by high temperatures, shaking or puncturing.   Thermal runaway can result in the ejection of toxic gas, shrapnel and particulates, as well as smoke and fire, which can cause death to humans and destruction to the environment

Each year, the Battery Show attracts 19,000+ engineers, business leaders, and innovative thinkers across the automotive, medical and aerospace industries to its national forum. According to organizers, “the battery and EV industry is moving faster than ever and staying ahead means having the right knowledge, the right connections, and the right strategies. The Battery Show Detroit 2026 delivers all three!”

Specifically, the PACT manufacturing team will be presenting and displaying the following powerful battery solutions at the four-day event:

  • PACT Thermo Shield™, a thin, lightweight, paper packaging material consisting of moisture-enhancing ink that controls thermal runaway (TR) by creating a vapor cloud when a lithium battery cell begins to burn and emit gas. The Thermo™ Shield wrap immediately cools the internal environment of the package below 780ºC, while limiting oxygen around the package to prevent the battery temperature from hitting 820°C, at which point, lethal and explosive chlorine carbides and acids can form.
  • TR Sleeve , a crucial safety solution for E-mobility equipment, like EVs, E-buses, E-bikes, E-scooters, and other modern devices in which a layer of Thermo Shield is wrapped around each battery cell to mitigate TR between them, thus serving as a heat and flame barrier. By adding only .009 inches to each battery cell diameter, TR Sleeve ensures comprehensive protection without disrupting the overall performance of the battery. It also removes the need for potting materials and other separators regardless of the specific battery design so that cells can be pressed or stacked very tightly. TR Sleeve stands at the forefront of safety, sustainability, and efficiency in battery technology and produces a greener and more cost-effective future.
  • TR Envelope, is the newest, customizable format of PACT Thermo Shield, which safely transports and stores recyclable smaller devices such as cell phones, pagers, smartwatches and A-D batteries, items becoming a hazard for commercial airlines during flight.
  • PACT Lion-X, a pre-mixed, water-based formula that quenches lithium-ion fires up to 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit within 30 seconds, while absorbing a greater amount of heat energy. Importantly, it also transforms smoke formation from lithium-ion fires such that virtually zero hydrogen and methane are produced, so that these toxic gases are not released into the environment. When the fire is completely smothered, PACT Lion-X only leaves behind a fine powder residue, which continues to cool surfaces and is easily washed off with a wet cloth or paper towel. It can be sprayed directly on ignited battery packs, cases and chargers and controls thermal runaway by keeping the surrounding cells cool to avoid propagation between them, thus, preventing a larger explosive event.  PACT Lion-X is currently going through rigorous testing with the Environmental Protection Agency and has passed a variety of industry tests including those conducted at the Polk County Oregon Fire Center, the Vtec Upstate Test Center, the Litchfield County Fire Center, and the UL-A Test.

Mort explains that the prolific growth of devices such as e-bikes, e-scooters, vapes, handheld electronics and power banks all rely on lithium-ion batteries, and many incidents involve low-quality or modified batteries made overseas that lack safety certification.  Exacerbating the problem is improper charging habits, like overnight charging, incompatible chargers, or damaged batteries increase the risk of fires, as do home charging setups in enclosed garages and apartments. Lastly, Mort recognizes that metropolitan areas with dense populations, battery storage facilities and most recently, airplanes can cause fires to spread quickly and are more difficult to contain.

“We are proud to have developed these innovative safety containment solutions that help protect property and human lives from dangerous and deadly lithium battery fires”, adds Mort. “We believe they will become critical gamechangers as lithium battery usage continues to grow worldwide and new micromobility products emerge in the marketplace.”
