WJC Decks and Remodeling Builds Decks Amid National Upgrade Survey

ANDOVER, MN – October 23, 2026 – PRESSADVANTAGE –

Nearly half of the homeowners in a new national survey said an outdoor living upgrade affects whether they remain in their current home. Trex Company reported the 48% finding on September 16, offering a timely lens on deck renovation decisions for homeowners in Andover, Minnesota, where WJC Decks and Remodeling builds new decks and works on existing ones. The figure comes from a national sample, not a count of local projects.

Trex commissioned the homeowner survey, conducted online by Atomik Research among 2,000 U.S. single-family homeowners who had lived in their homes for at least a year. Seventy-four percent said they were focused on remaining where they live and turning the home into their dream home. Fifty-five percent planned to renovate rather than relocate anytime soon, while 8% planned to move without making improvements first. Those are reported intentions, not a forecast of home sales or deck construction.

The outdoor results explain why that broad finding is relevant to deck work. Sixty-three percent of respondents identified a backyard or patio/deck as their preferred place to shake off daily stress, and 54% said outdoor space helped them decompress more than any room indoors. A deck is only one possible outdoor improvement. The study did not ask Andover households whether they intend to build one, but it does show how much outdoor use mattered to the people surveyed.

That national result cannot decide what to build in any one yard. A household with a sound deck but worn boards faces a different choice from one that needs more floor area, a different connection to the house or a replacement structure. WJC’s deck installation page lists new construction alongside inspection, repair, resurfacing and remodeling. The useful question is what the existing deck can support and what the household wants the space to do.

A site review can put those options side by side. Replacing boards may address wear without changing the footprint. Adding floor area changes movement around doors, stairs and yard access. A rebuild is a different undertaking from refinishing a usable surface. The survey gives no answer about the condition of anyone’s deck. A written scope and an on-site look are more useful than treating every outdoor upgrade as the same purchase.

The distinction extends to approvals. A surface change, deck addition and replacement may have different permit and inspection paths. Owners should confirm the requirements for a proposed design with Andover before construction. A national survey cannot decide whether a particular deck project needs city review.

The same caution applies to the survey’s return-on-investment language. Among respondents reflecting on past renovations, 43% said a project was worth doing because it improved quality of life, while 42% cited home value. The figures describe why those people valued work they had already undertaken. They do not estimate the resale value of a deck in Minnesota, establish construction cost or promise that any one renovation will recover its price.

This is a distinct subject from WJC’s earlier public releases on composite and PVC deck construction, summer shade and soil assessment for footings. Those pieces addressed materials, weather and site conditions; the September 16 survey instead measures homeowners’ reported preference to improve and remain in place. The connection to WJC is its existing deck-building and remodeling scope in the Andover market, not participation in the research, a manufacturer partnership or a claimed response to it.

Trex reports that Atomik Research fielded the survey between July 29 and August 3, 2026, with a 2.2-percentage-point overall margin of error at a 95% confidence level. For owners considering a deck, its findings put outdoor space in the renovation conversation. Local decisions still turn on the structure that is already there, what the household wants to do outdoors and the approval path for the proposed work.
